Railway lines north not used nowRailway lines north not used now

Here we are at the north end of Armidale Railway Station. The lines disappearing in a northerly direction aren’t used any more. Once upon a time this was the Main North Line taking traffic from Sydney to the Queensland border where they had to change to the Queensland railway system and their different rail gauge.

To the right is an old railcar being renovated. There are plans to run tourist traffic to Glen Innes, about 100km (60 miles) north of Armidale - whether that actually happens remains to be seen. The cost of maintaining the north line may prove too high.
