In times of drought cattle are taken onto the long paddock” to let them forage for food. The long paddock” is the name given, in an Australian sort of way, to the place where feed can be found - at the side of roads. Such an activity must only be undertaken with a permit, and cattle must be secured in a fenced area during the hours of darkness.

I came across these animals while driving to work this morning.
