Puff ball

I’ve noticed many of what I believe to be puff balls dotted here and there. It’s about 10 cm high / 4 inches in height. I expected it to feel more delicate than it does - it’s quite firm to the touch. The top of it looks as if it’s been delicately nibbled by some small animal.
